How Do Dental Implants Work?

The success of dental implants relies on osseointegration—a natural process where the titanium implant fuses with the jawbone. This integration takes a few months, but once complete, the implant provides lifelong support for your restoration, ensuring stability and functionality.

Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants provide a long-term solution for missing teeth, offering both durability and a natural look. Made of biocompatible titanium, these implants are surgically placed in the jawbone, serving as a sturdy artificial tooth root. They support restorations such as crowns, bridges, or fixed dentures while also preserving jawbone health.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Before dental implants, tooth loss often led to further complications, including bone deterioration and additional missing teeth. Today, implants offer a reliable way to restore your smile and maintain oral health. Key benefits include:

  • A strong, secure foundation for dental restorations
  • Full restoration of bite function for comfortable chewing and speaking
  • Prevention of jawbone deterioration, which helps protect surrounding teeth
  • Preservation of facial structure and aesthetics

Implant-Supported Full-Arch Restorations: All-on-4 & All-on-X

At Riverside Dental NYC, we offer All-on-4 and All-on-X full-arch restoration-- cutting-edge solutions for replacing an entire upper or lower set of teeth. These advanced implant-supported options provide a permanent, natural-looking alternative to traditional dentures, restoring both function and confidence in your smile.

What Are Full-Arch Restorations?

Both All-on-4 and All-on-X are implant-supported full-arch solutions designed to replace missing teeth efficiently. Unlike conventional dentures or individual implants for each missing tooth, these techniques use a minimal number of strategically placed implants to support an entire set of prosthetic teeth. This approach provides stability, preserves bone health, and eliminates the need for extensive surgical procedures.

CALL US (646) 414-6238

The All-on-4 Solution: Efficiency & Reliability

As the name suggests, All-on-4 utilizes four precisely positioned dental implants to anchor a full set of prosthetic teeth. This streamlined approach offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Minimally invasive placement with fewer implants
  • Faster recovery compared to traditional implant procedures
  • Immediate function, with temporary teeth often placed the same day
  • Durability and stability, ensuring long-lasting results
  • Preservation of jawbone density to maintain facial structure
  • No dietary restrictions once fully healed

The Dental Implant Process at Riverside Dental Care

  • Initial Consultation & Treatment Planning

    1. Comprehensive Exam: The dentist evaluates the patient's oral and general health, takes a medical history, and discusses treatment goals.
    2. X-rays/3D Imaging (CBCT Scan): Cone-beam CT scans help assess bone density, sinus position, and nerve locations to determine implant feasibility.
    3. Treatment Plan Discussion: The dentist explains the implant process, costs, timelines, and any necessary preliminary procedures (such as extractions or bone grafts).

Note: If the patient has inadequate bone, they may need bone grafting, which can extend the treatment timeline by several months.

  • Preparatory Procedures (if needed)

    1. Tooth Extraction: If the tooth being replaced is still present, it may need to be extracted. Healing time may be required before implant placement.
    2. Bone Grafting (if necessary):  If there is insufficient bone, a bone graft may be placed. Healing time can take 3-6 months before implant placement.
  • Implant Placement (Surgical Phase One)

    1. Anesthesia & Surgery: The patient is given local anesthesia (or sedation if needed). A small incision is made in the gum, and the titanium implant is placed into the jawbone.
    2. Healing & Osseointegration (3-6 months): The bone gradually fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration, ensuring long-term stability.

Note: A temporary crown, denture, or healing abutment may be placed for aesthetics and function during healing.

  • Abutment Placement (Surgical Phase - Two)

    1. Minor Surgery (if needed): Once the implant is integrated, a small incision is made to expose the implant.
    2. Abutment Attachment: A connector (abutment) is placed on the implant to hold the final crown.
    3. Gum Healing (1-2 weeks): The gums heal around the abutment before the final restoration.

Note: Some modern implant techniques allow for abutment placement at the same time as implant surgery, reducing treatment time.

  • Final Restoration (Crown, Bridge, or Denture Placement)

    1. Impression Taking: Some modern implant techniques allow for abutment placement at the same time as implant surgery, reducing treatment time.
    2. Crown Fabrication: The dental lab creates a porcelain, zirconia, or metal-based crown for aesthetics and durability.
    3. Final Crown Placement: The custom crown is attached to the abutment and adjusted for proper bite and aesthetics.

Note: For full-arch restorations, an implant-supported bridge or overdenture may be used instead of a single crown.

  • Post-Treatment Care & Maintenance

    1. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular check-ups ensure healing and proper function.
    2. Oral Hygiene & Maintenance: Patients are advised on brushing, flossing, and using interdental brushes or water flossers to maintain implant health.
    3. Routine Dental Visits: Professional cleanings and exams every 3-6 months help ensure implant longevity.

Note: With proper care, dental implants can last 20+ years or even a lifetime!

MORE TESTIMONIALS

"Dr. Angelica Silivria at Riverside Dental Care is terrific!
Yesterday, while I was there for a cleaning, she also repaired a chipped front tooth - and it looks amazing!
I’d been to Riverside Dental in the past- for root canals that my previous dentist was not able to do.
And two crowns - at much better price than the other dentist was charging.
